Background of the Study
Health budget allocation plays a critical role in determining the quality, accessibility, and efficiency of healthcare delivery. Adequate funding ensures the availability of medical infrastructure, essential drugs, well-trained personnel, and improved healthcare services. In Nigeria, the federal and state governments allocate a portion of their budgets to the health sector, aiming to meet the healthcare needs of the population. However, despite these allocations, disparities in service delivery persist across different states.
Kebbi State, located in northwestern Nigeria, faces significant healthcare challenges, including inadequate facilities, a shortage of healthcare workers, and high out-of-pocket expenses for patients. While budgetary allocations for health have increased in recent years, concerns remain about whether these funds are effectively utilized to improve service delivery. Additionally, inefficient financial management, corruption, and bureaucratic bottlenecks often hinder the optimal use of allocated resources.
This study seeks to appraise the impact of health budget allocations on healthcare delivery in Kebbi State, evaluating whether financial investments in the health sector translate into tangible improvements in healthcare services.
Statement of the Problem
Despite government efforts to increase health sector funding, many healthcare facilities in Kebbi State continue to suffer from inadequate infrastructure, medical supply shortages, and poor healthcare worker remuneration. The persistent gap between budget allocations and healthcare outcomes raises concerns about the efficiency of financial planning, disbursement, and utilization in the state's health sector.
If budget allocations do not significantly improve healthcare services, the effectiveness of public health financing strategies may be questionable. This study aims to critically examine the relationship between health budget allocations and healthcare delivery outcomes in Kebbi State.
